The announcement was met with euphoria by hockey fans in Winnipeg. Thousands gathered in the downtown area to celebrate today’s announcement – the majority of them decked out in Winnipeg Jets garb.

The inked had barely dried on the transaction when True North launched into their sales pitch for season’s tickets. An aggressive season ticket campaign is underway as you read this, cleverly titled “Drive to 13.” The goal is to sell 13,000 season tickets before the puck drops next fall. Ja Rule is tying up all of his loose ends before he heads off to prison next month. After years of beef with rapper 50 Cent, Ja has declared a truce with the fellow Queens native.

Rule said in an interview with The Life Files, that he has no problems with his longtime nemesis. "It's resolved now," he declared. "I'm cool. We ain't beefing no more. We'll never collaborate. That's just what it is. You don't have to be at war with somebody, but it's also kind of like U.S. and another country that they may not get along with. We don't gotta go to war, but we're not friends either. But we can coincide inside of a world. He's doing him, and he's not thinking about me, and I'm doing me and I'm not thinking about him."

Rule also addressed his short lived Twitter beef kicked off by 50's taunts regarding his prison sentence. After expressing his disdain for the G-Unit frontman, via the social networking site, he now feels ashamed for lashing out. "I was a little ashamed of myself to be even involved with that. Because I'm like, yo, I'm 35 years old and I'm on Twitter beef? That's not something I want to entertain, but I'm a man first, so I'm reading s--- like him sending tweets and little things about me."

In the end, Rule said that he was angry with himself for allowing 50 to get a rise out of him, but has since moved on. 50 has yet to announce that he will no longer give Rule a hard time, and judging by his past beefs with the likes of Rick Ross and Game, he doesn't seem to give up on a rift easily.

The former Murder Inc. rapper will be officially sentenced on June 8 where he is scheduled to begin a two-year prison sentence, stemming from a weapons possession charge in 2007. Prior to his incarceration the Rule announced that he will release his eighth album, 'The Renaissance Project.'

If you happened to see The Hangover Part II over the weekend, I’m sorry you had to sit through that, but if you’re lucky you may have also been able to catch the very first teaser trailer for David Fincher’s remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo on the big screen. Much like The Muppetslast week, they still haven’t released the trailer online, however a bootleg version has been making the rounds and the quality is actually pretty decent. Considering that it hasn’t been pulled off YouTube yet, I can only assume that it was leaked on purpose, or at the very least, that Sony approves. And thank god for that, because what a fantastic trailer it is.

New Jersey made a big splash in the NFL in April, when seven players from the state were taken in the first round of the NFL draft. Eight months later, four players with ties to New Jersey were named to the 2010 Pro Bowl Roster:

Two Rutgers products, Giants center Shaun O'Hara and Ravens running back Ray Rice, made the list. So did Cowboys receiver Miles Austin, a Garfield native and Monmouth graduate, and Bergen Catholic's Brian Cushing, now a rookie linebacker for Houston.

All four players are reserves. This is O'Hara's second straight Pro Bowl selection, and the first time Austin, Cushing and Rice have been named to their conference's All-Star team. U.C.L.A. has backed into bowl play like no other, earning a trip to the EagleBank Bowl only after Army’s loss to Navy to end the regular season left the Black Knights a win away from bowl eligibility. The Bruins will take the bid, and do so happily, especially when considering last season’s brutal offensive showing and the youth of this year’s roster. Whether U.C.L.A. fans will make the trip cross country to frigid Washington, D.C., remains to be seen. (I would bet on a light showing.) While U.C.L.A. Coach Rick Neuheisel is still experiencing some growing pains in leading the Bruins back into the national picture, Temple’s rebirth is officially complete. Coach Al Golden, in his fourth year, has taken the Owls from 1-11 in 2006 to 9-3 this fall, and within one victory of playing for a Mid-American Conference championship. The regular season may not have ended perfectly for Temple, but the program will remain a major conference contender as long as Golden remains with the program. After winning nine games, it may not be long.

It says much about just how poor the Bruins played in 2008 that a 6-6 finish, with the 99th-ranked offense in the country, resembles progress. But make no mistake: there’s a reason this was the final team selected for bowl play, and that’s because U.C.L.A. is simply not very good. Better days are surely ahead, and perhaps the struggles from 2008-9 can be traced to the youth and inexperience that has defined the roster. Only three seniors start on offense — receiver Terrence Austin, tight end Logan Paulsen and fullback Chane Moline — and the freshmen Kevin Prince and Johnathan Franklin lead the team in passing and rushing, respectively. The youth continues on the offensive line, which features a starting lineup of a freshman, a junior and three sophomores. The offense is still growing, but should be better next season and, maybe, better after the dozen or so practices leading up to this game. The defense has been up to the task of carrying this anemic U.C.L.A. attack, limiting eight opponents to 24 points or less and only once (the second quarter against California) experiencing any monumental collapse. There is experience on this side of the ball, with five seniors, including the talented cornerback Alterraun Verner, joining the junior defensive tackle Brian Price to form the nation’s 31st-best scoring defense.

Probably better than Charlie Sheen’s! As you may be aware, the Hot Shots! Part Deux actor was arrested in Aspen early Friday morning and charged with second-degree assault, menacing, and criminal mischief. It’s not as fun as those last two charges sound, though, as it later came out that the alleged victim was Sheen’s wife, Brooke Mueller. Sheen was freed on $8,500 bail Friday night, but things only got more confusing from there.

On Saturday, TMZ reported that Mueller recanted her accusation to the police, saying she was drunk when she called 911 at 8:34 a.m. And she was! Mueller scored a .13 BAC count (Sheen was at a respectable .04). Yesterday, TMZ reported that Mueller initially told the police Sheen threatened her with a knife … which is part of the story that she already took back, we think.

This morning, People provided some comic relief, digging up Sheen and Mueller’s Christmas card, featuring the couple and their twin babies, along with the helpful explanation that it “looks like Charlie Sheen didn't expect to get coal — or police handcuffs — this Christmas.” People also has an actual report on what happened, claiming the couple were a little tipsy at a friend’s dinner party, where they began engaging in a fight that lasted through the morning. Don't worry, though, 'cause they’ll be undergoing counseling. In related news, nobody cares how Jon Cryer’s Christmas went.

Big, dumb comedies? What’s so dumb about them? I never felt laughing – or a couple hours of escaping the doldrums of the grease and dust of manual labor – was too dumb. I noticed my taste for “dumb comedy” was higher depending on how bad I had it in my current job. If I have two hours to give, why not enjoy one’s self after eight or more hours of hell?

There are many reasons why I’ll go for the big, dumb comedy before I injest more high-brow fare. One is the utter lack of pretension. Most of the best “dumb comedies” are devoid of it. Bill Murray and Harold Ramis always had a cool-kid veneer to them, that the audience was laughing at the squares along with the actors (most likely they were laughing at you), but the best of the “dumb comedies” avoid snark. The losers in the “dumb comedies” are the protagonists. Unless you’re Brad Pitt, you can relate to that circumstance at least once in life.

But class and circumstance aside, getting the maximum amount of laughs from the maximum amount of people is paramount for the “dumb comedy” and one reason why the films sold so well at their peak. Genuinely funny people, put into funny circumstances and enough of a story to move the film along – that’s all that’s needed.

1. Tommy Boy (1995) – Chris Farley’s creative course landed him from scene-stealer at Saturday Night Live to his first comedic feature in 1995. Many felt Farley’s act was cruel fat jokes, but his act was much deeper. Hyper-energetic, emotional and frail, Farley’s characters had a defined innocence, which he treated with great respect and were a genuine reflection on himself. SNL has brought in resident fat guys for years to try to recapture the Farley magic (Keenan Thompson, Horatio Sans), none have. None have the talent and most don’t have the ability to be as funny on that level. Mainly, they don’t have the heart or the chops. Farley lived and breathed his characters.

Tommy Boy featured laugh after laugh, many at the expense of Farley, but sidekick David Spade gets his digs – as does Spade’s 1968 GTX. Brian Denehy, Rob Lowe and Bo Derek fill out the solid cast for the film, which is washed in a cozy Midwestern, middle class feel.

The film is full of dumb laughs (The Hangover obviously aped the entire scene with the deer), but the heart is there – something director’s and writers recognized during the mid 90s. Tommy was hit with the worst possible tragedy, but he kept going while making you smile along the way. In the end, you realized the joke is on Rob Lowe’s shyster, elitist crook – making it all the better.

2. Dumb and Dumber (1994) – The mid-90s were the boom period for “dumb comedy” after Jim Carrey hit the box office. Studios figured laughs sold (and they were right), which led to Carrey becoming the biggest box office draw in Hollywood. As a result, many of the SNL players suddenly found themselves awashed in film scripts.

Dumb and Dumber worked because Jeff Daniels is as funny as Carrey. Carrey had the natural comedic chops, but so does Daniels, who some how transitioned from the straight-man cop buddy to Keanu Reeves in Speed a few months earlier to driving a 1984 Chevy Van made up as a sheep dog. Nearly every big laugh is iconic, especially the road trip with Mike Star in tow.

The Farrelly Brothers best effort, the duo never did recaptured Dumb and Dumber (I never did care for Ben Stiller or There’s Something About Mary), and how could they. Whatever creative ammo they had was spent – resorting to gross out gags and unlikable characters in later work.

3. Billy Madison (1995) – The year 1995 was banner for “dumb comedy.” Damon Wayans’ Major Payne, Tommy Boy, and Billy Madison were released within weeks of each other early in 1995 and audiences laughed their way to and from the theater. Each film hit No. 1.

Billy Madison was Adam Sandler’s first feature film and his first hit. The always welcome Darren McGavin plays Darren McGavin, and Bradley Whitfield the villain. Part of the film’s appeal his Whitfield, who sucks in the villain role and had as much fun in the process as Sander.

The film had rather conservative themes. Finding purpose in life, the “lost puppy” speech and Carl the side-man who started as a bellhop getting the company due to loyalty and experience. Invisible penguins, nudie magazines, perverted and obese ex-pro wrestling principals, Brigitte Wilson as the hottest teacher of all time, and Norm MacDonald. The “People to Kill” list – are those conservative themes?

4. Happy Gilmore (1996) – To the detriment of film critics everywhere, Happy Gilmore showed Sandler was no box office one-hit wonder. His ex-hockey-player-turned-golfer flick delivered the laughs. Christopher McDonald’s Shooter McGavin became the template role for dumb comedies – he essentially played the same character in Norm MacDonald’s Dirty Work.

Isn’t that “Jaws” from the Bond films?

5. Freddie Got Fingered (2001) – My love of Freddie Got Fingered started before I saw the film. Grabbing the local paper, the resident film critic gave it a resounding “F” – the first time any such grade was given. One look at my then-fiancee, I uttered: “We have to see this movie.”

Green did his usual antics – you either find them funny or not, and I do most of the time. But the real treat is Rip Torn. Torn is a tour de force, over the top and chewing scenery. He goes full bore into a dad crazed by his live-in son who refused to move out or get a steady job. Torn stole the thunder, which even the director and writer acknowledged, when Green’s character pitches a cartoon with his dad as the main character and the executive declares Torn “too unbelievable.”

Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach has been suspended while the school investigates serious claims that he mistreated an injured player.

According to reports, Adam James, the son of former NFL running back and current ESPN college football analyst Craig James, suffered a concussion and was unable to practice with the team in the lead up to the Alamo Bowl January 2.

The family alleges that Mike Leach arranged to confine James to an equipment room for three hours while practice was taking place on one day, and then confined James to an electrical closet during a second practice session.

Texas Tech said in a statement that Ruffin McNeill will assume duties as Interim Head Coach and will coach the team during the Alamo Bowl while the investigation is on going.

Texas Tech Suspends Mike Leach

Texas Tech announced Monday afternoon that it has suspended head football coach Mike Leach after receiver Adam James and his father, ESPN analyst and former SMU running back Craig James, complained to the school about alleged mistreatment after the player sustained a serious head injury. Leach is currently being investigated by the school.

Defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeill will assume the head coaching duties on an interim basis while the Red Raiders prepare to meet Michigan State in Saturday's Alamo Bowl.

A source with knowledge of the situation confirmed that Leach is under investigation for allegedly sending a player into a darkened room after he came to practice wearing sunglasses as a result of a recent mild concussion. It has been confirmed that the unnamed player is sophomore receiver Adam James.

James did not immediately return a phone call from FanHouse, but he did issue a statement through ESPN.

"Mr. and Mrs. James took the step with great regret and after consideration and prayer to convey to the Texas Tech Administration that their son had been subjected to actions and treatment not consistent with common sense rules for safety and health," the statement said. "The James family believes this is a matter important to protect all the fine young men involved in Tech football and the University's reputation for developing and educating young men and women.

"Over the past year, there has been a greatly enhanced recognition of the dangers of concussions and the potential for long-term physical damage to players. At virtually every level of football coaching, cases where children and young men have sustained concussions have generated serious discussion of the importance of correct treatment and diagnosis. The entire James family is supportive of the University and looks forward to a resolution of the matter."

According to sources, Leach ordered Adam James into a darkened room for a two-hour period after not believing his injury was severe. Two days later, Leach ordered the trainers to again place Adam James in the dark room.

Leach apparently has not denied his treatment of the player and did not follow a demand from the school to issue an apology which resulted in Monday's suspension.

In a released statement, the school said such complaints are considered serious matters and therefore have launched an investigation into the incident, effective immediately. Leach, who became Tech's winningest football coach this season, will remain under suspension until the investigation is complete.

In the statement, the school said the decision to suspend Leach was made with the consultation of the Texas Tech president, the Texas Tech University System chancellor and Board of Regents chairman and vice chairman.

The school, through spokesman Chris Cook, said no other comments would be made at this time. Neither Texas Tech athletic director Gerald Myers nor Leach were answering their cell phones Monday afternoon to comment.

Leach is now the second Big 12 coach to come under fire in recent weeks for alleged mistreatment of players. Former Kansas coach Mark Mangino was investigated by Kansas toward the end of the season for allegedly putting his hands on a player and also for apparent mean-spirited comments made to some of his players. Mangino resigned a few days after the season ended.

But while under investigation, Leach spoke up on Mangino's behalf.

Texas Tech has suspended its coach after receiving a "complaint from a player and his parents regarding [Leach's] treatment of the athlete after an injury." He won't coach in the Alamo Bowl. UPDATE: It's Craig James's kid. See below.

Texas Tech University recently received a complaint from a player and his parents regarding Red Raider Head Football Coach Mike Leach's treatment of the athlete after an injury.

At Texas Tech all such complaints are considered as serious matters, and as a result, an investigation of the incident is underway. Until the investigation is complete, Texas Tech University is suspending coach Leach from all duties as Head Football Coach effective immediately. The investigation into this matter will continue in a thorough and fair manner.

Coach Ruffin McNeill will assume duties as Interim Head Coach and will coach the team during the Alamo Bowl.

The decision to take these actions was made in consultation with the Texas Tech University president, and the Texas Tech University System chancellor, and Board of Regents chairman and vice chairman.

Because this is a personnel matter no further comment will be forthcoming.

UPDATE: ESPN's Joe Schad reports via Twitter: "Mike Leach is alleged to have isolated a player in a dark closet for not practicing with a concussion."

The Trapp Family Singers gave the second of two concerts of Christmas music yesterday afternoon. The audience filled Town Hall and half of its stage, the other half being occupied by the several members of the family and a large Christmas tree trimmed with cookies and ribbons. The program was kept strictly informal, and the Baroness Maria von Trapp, acting as spokesman for the group, explained that since she wished the public to go away carrying with it the feeling of Christmas, all encores would be sung before the intermission, leaving the carols for the very end of the program.

Although a good part of the charm exercised by this gifted family over the spectator is purely extramusical, there is no denying that the performances adhere to a high level of good, homely, nonvirtuoso musical ability. The program yesterday was varied, including a cappella group, various combinations of voices, spinet, and recorders, and two delightful Austrian folk dances. One of these, a waltz for octet of recorders, sounded like a careful and very gentle calliope.

The large work of the concert was a Christmas Cantata of the seventeenth century, I Bid Thee Welcome, Bridegroom Sweet, by Luebeck, sung with solos by Baroness von Trapp, obbligati on two recorders by two of her daughters and choral work by the others. Dr. Franz Wasner conducted from the spinet, which was beneath the Christmas tree. The freshness of the voices, the effortlessness of the singing and the touching unpretentiousness of the music itself combined to give an impression of purity as simple and bright as an Alpine winter’s day. The audience, in the mood to receive just such nostalgic suggestions, responded with great warmth.

I hope the Cubs get Melky Cabrera away from the Yankees. After the Milton Bradley fiasco, and even though they brought it on themselves, the Cubs are due a break, and Melky just might be it.

Melky is a just-better-than-average defensive centerfielder, he had a career best .752 OPS in 2009, and he’s still only 25 years old in 2010. In other words, he’s a good risk for the Cubs to take. The Cubs have been so desperate for a real centerfielder, they played Kosuke Fukudome 113 games in center last year. KF is a good defensive rightfielder, but a bad defensive centerfielder.

Aside from the improved defense, the Cubs would have a balanced top-to-bottom line-up in 2010, even if Melky barely improved at the plate over his 2009 performance. Even though they will an average age of 33.25, the Cubs have a reasonably good chance that they’ll get more offensive production as a group out of Derrick Lee, Aramis Ramirez, Alfonso Soriano and Fukodome in 2010 than they did in 2009, due to the injuries Ramirez and Soriano had.

I also like the chances for Giovanni Soto to bounce back in 2010. He’ll be 27 next year, and even hitting only .218 in ‘09, he still had a .702 OPS, an acceptable number for a catcher.

Cabrera, 25, is the eldest of the three players the Braves received from New York. The youngest, reported to be 19-year-old Arodys Vizcaino, could be the most special. Baseball America recently rated him the Yankees' third best prospect.

When Javier Vazquez makes his first start of the season for the Yanks in April, it could very well be against the last team he faced in the Bronx. If the Yankees fit him into the third slot in the rotation, he will pitch against the Red Sox in Boston on April 7. More likely than not, though, the Yankees will give the ball to Andy Pettitte for that start, and Vazquez will pitch against the Rays in Tampa Bay over the weekend.

For Yankee fans, just the idea of Javier Vazquez and the Red Sox is enough to give us nightmares. While not the losing pitcher in Game 7 of the ALCS, Vazquez was on the mound when Johnny Damon hit a grand slam that effectively nailed shut the coffin on the Yankees that year. A few weeks later, Vazquez was unceremoniously dumped on Arizona for an aging Randy Johnson. Unfairly or not, Vazquez took the fall for a team-wide collapse and has since been demonized in the minds of Yankee fans since then.

What we forget though is Javier Vazquez’s All Star-worthy first half of 2004. Through his first 18 starts, Vazquez went 10-5 with a 3.56 ERA. He struck out 81 in 104.2 innings and sported a 3.12 K/BB ratio. In the second half, though, everything fell apart for the right-hander. He went 5-6 with a 5.79 ERA and found himself pitching in relief in the playoffs. He got the Game 3 win in Boston but was hardly stellar in the Yanks’ 19-8 trouncing of the Red Sox.

After that playoff series, Vazquez, Brad Halsey, Dioner Navarro and cash went west while Randy Johnson came East, and Vazquez has since flourished into what he was before the Bronx: a durable strike-out pitcher who can give a team quality innings from the middle of the rotation. He earned himself some Cy Young votes over the last few years and pitched well in the AL Central and NL East. In his 162 starts over four years, he has a 4.09 ERA and a 110 ERA+. He has struck out 1027 in 1062.2 innings while walking just 257 for a fantastic 4.00 K/BB ratio.

Vazquez won’t have an easy go of it with the fans at first in the Bronx. He’s going to have to earn his stripes again and push away the memories of a bad second half. Rumors of shoulder problems swirled around him in 2004, but those rumblings have been dispelled. He simply could not get his mechanics in line for a handful of starts during the second half of the season.

The Yanks never wanted to and probably should never have traded Vazquez, and now Javy and the Yankees get a second chance. Hopefully, it will end on a better note than Vazquez’s last pinstriped appearance. He won’t be expected to front the staff and will face far less pressure to deliver for the World Series champs. With this trade, either Joba Chamberlain or Phil Hughes will spend at least part of the season as a reliever, and the Yanks rotation and bullpen are stronger because of it. And so as the AL arms race continues, Javier Vazquez will reenter the fray.

“I was always an entertainer. I was a ham as a little girl and I’m a ham today,” says Lady Gaga, 23, who made a name for herself on the Lower East Side club scene with the infectious dance-pop party song “Beautiful Dirty Rich,” and wild, theatrical, and often tongue-in-cheek “shock art” performances where Gaga – who designs and makes many of her stage outfits -- would strip down to her hand-crafted hot pants and bikini top, light cans of hairspray on fire, and strike a pose as a disco ball lowered from the ceiling to the orchestral sounds of A Clockwork Orange.

“I always loved rock and pop and theater. When I discovered Queen and David Bowie is when it really came together for me and I realized I could do all three,” says Gaga, who nicked her name from Queen’s song “Radio Gaga” and who cites rock star girlfriends, Peggy Bundy, and Donatella Versace as her fashion icons. “I look at those artists as icons in art. It’s not just about the music. It’s about the performance, the attitude, the look; it’s everything. And, that is where I live as an artist and that is what I want to accomplish.”

That goal might seem lofty, but consider the artist: Gaga is the girl who at age 4 learned piano by ear. By age 13, she had written her first piano ballad. At 14, she played open mike nights at clubs such as New York’s the Bitter End by night and was teased for her quirky, eccentric style by her Convent of the Sacred Heart School (the Manhattan private school Nicky and Paris Hilton attended) classmates by day. At age 17, she became was one of 20 kids in the world to get early admission to Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. Signed by her 20th birthday and writing songs for other artists (such as the Pussycat Dolls, and has been asked to write for a series of Interscope artists) before her debut album was even released, Lady Gaga has earned the right to reach for the sky.

“My goal as an artist is to funnel a pop record to a world in a very interesting way,” says Gaga, who wrote all of her lyrics, all of her melodies, and played most of the synth work on her album, The Fame (Streamline/KonLive/Cherrytree/Interscope). “I almost want to trick people into hanging with something that is really cool with a pop song. It’s almost like the spoonful of sugar and I’m the medicine.”

On The Fame, it’s as if Gaga took two parts dance-pop, one part electro-pop, and one part rock with a splash of disco and burlesque and generously poured it into the figurative martini glasses of the world in an effort to get everyone drunk with her Fame. “The Fame is about how anyone can feel famous,” she explains. “Pop culture is art. It doesn’t make you cool to hate pop culture, so I embraced it and you hear it all over The Fame. But, it’s a sharable fame. I want to invite you all to the party. I want people to feel a part of this lifestyle.”

The CD’s opener and first single, “Just Dance,” gets the dance floor rocking with it’s “fun, L.A., celebratory vibe.” As for the equally catchy, “Boys Boys Boys,” Gaga doesn’t mind wearing her influences on her sleeve. “I wanted to write the female version of Motley Crue’s ‘Girls Girls Girls,’ but with my own twist. I wanted to write a pop song that rockers would like.”

“Beautiful Dirty Rich” sums up her time of self-discovery, living in the Lower East Side and dabbling in drugs and the party scene. “That time, and that song, was just me trying to figure things out,” says Gaga. “Once I grabbed the reigns of my artistry, I fell in love with that more than I did with the party life.” On first listen, “Paparazzi” might come off as a love song to cameras, and in all honestly, Gaga jokes “on one level it IS about wooing the paparazzi and wanting fame. But, it’s not to be taken completely seriously. It’s about everyone’s obsession with that idea. But, it’s also about wanting a guy to love you and the struggle of whether you can have success or love or both.”

Gaga shows her passion for love songs on such softer tracks as the Queen-influenced “Brown Eyes” and the sweet kiss-off break-up song “Nothing I can Say (eh eh).” “‘Brown Eyes’ is the most vulnerable song on the album,” she explains. “‘Eh Eh’ is my simple pop song about finding someone new and breaking up with the old boyfriend.”

For the new tour for this album, fans will be treated to a more polished version of what they saw (and loved) at her critically acclaimed Lollapalooza show in August 2007 and Winter Music Conference performance in March 2008. “This new show is the couture version of my handmade downtown performance of the past few years. It’s more fine-tuned, but some of my favorite elements to my past shows – the disco balls, hot pants, sequin, and stilettos – will still be there. Just more fierce and more of a conceptual show with a vision for pop performance art.”

It’s been a while since a new pop artist has made her way in the music industry the old-fashioned/grass roots way by paying her dues with seedy club gigs and self-promotion. This is one rising pop star who hasn’t been plucked from a model casting call, born into a famous family, won a reality TV singing contest, or emerged from a teen cable TV sitcom. “I did this the way you are supposed to. I played every club in New York City and I bombed in every club and then killed it in every club and I found myself as an artist. I learned how to survive as an artist, get real, and how to fail and then figure out who I was as singer and performer. And, I worked hard.”

The good news for MTV, at least, is that its latest critics aren’t complaining that the cable channel doesn’t show enough music videos anymore.

On Thursday night, MTV broadcast the first episode of its reality series “Jersey Shore,” which follows the exploits of a group of young adults during one summer in and around the vacation community of Seaside Heights.

Before viewers could even see the show, it had already been protested by the Italian-American organization Unico National, which objected to the use of the term “Guido” in the “Jersey Shore” press materials and its stereotypical depictions of Italians. (Andre Dimino, the president of Unico, told The Newark Star-Ledger, “Trash television sells.”)

Now that the program has started airing, it has drawn the ire of the Jersey Shore Convention and Visitors Bureau.

In a statement on Friday, Daniel Cappello, the bureau’s executive director, said, “We’re flattered that MTV thinks we’re an interesting enough destination to warrant an entire reality series. But the national TV audience is hardly getting the full story.”

The statement continued:

MTV is providing a one-dimensional, dramatized version of a very small group of visitors’ summer experiences in one Jersey Shore town. We have many spectacular ocean and bay beaches in Monmouth and Ocean County, from the Atlantic Highlands down to Long Beach Island, and countless choices for people of all ages and walks of life to enjoy year round.

Twitter is down right now (it’s 10:45 p.m. Pacific Time as I hit publish), and it may not be the standard technical hiccup that the site experiences once in a while.

When I try to connect to the site, I get an error message from my browser (not the infamous fail whale), but TechCrunch says it has received several tips stating that around 10 p.m. Pacific Time, the site was hacked and defaced with a message from a group identifying itself as the “Iranian Cyber Army.” The group may be using a DNS redirect to accomplish this.

I’ve pasted the image below. I’ve also emailed Twitter to see if the company can shed any light on what’s going on. Twitter has had a number of issues with security before, but apparently it’s not just Twitter tonight — the image is showing up on other sites, like mowjcamp.org too.

Some covering the story say it is likely that Twitter has been so compromised, that account passwords might have been hacked as well. TechCrunch has included an advisory that Twitter users should change their other passwords if they use the same one for multiple services.

Chris Henry Seriously Injured in Auto Accident

Bengals WR Chris Henry suffered what team spokesman Jack Brennan called "very serious" injuries in a car accident in Charlotte today that stemmed, police said, from a domestic dispute.

Police told the Cincinnati Enquirer that Henry jumped into the back of the bed of a truck driven by his fiance, Loleini Tonga. Henry then fell out of the truck as the dispute between the two lingered.

Police found Henry with life-threatening injuries.

Henry, 26, went on injured reserve on Nov. 9 after suffering a broken left arm.

December 2009. Wildlife law enforcement agents with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources are investigating the shooting of an endangered whooping crane in Indiana.

The crane was shot sometime between Saturday, Nov. 28, when it was seen by an International Crane Foundation (ICF) staff member, and Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2009, when an ICF volunteer found the carcass.

Mother of only chick successfully hatched and migrated from captivity
The crane was identified by a leg band, and determined to be the seven-year old mother of "Wild-1," the only whooping crane chick successfully hatched (in 2006) and migrated from captivity.

500 whooping cranes left alive
There are approximately 500 whooping cranes left in the world. The crane and its mate were among 19 whooping cranes migrating from their summer grounds in Wisconsin to their wintering grounds in Florida.

"To kill and abandon one of 500 remaining members of species shows a lack of reverence for life and an absence of simple common sense," said John Christian, FWS Assistant Regional Director for Migratory Birds. "It is inconceivable that someone would have such little regard for conservation."

$2,500 reward
Indiana Department of Natural Resources conservation officers and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service special agents are conducting a joint investigation into the incident. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is offering a minimum reward of $2,500 to the person or people who provide information leading to a conviction.

Anyone with information should call the Indiana Department of Natural Resources 24-hour hotline at: 1-800 TIP IDNR (800-847-4367), or the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service at 317-346-7016. Callers can remain anonymous.

In addition to the Endangered Species Act, whooping cranes are protected by state laws and the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

The premiere of "Gone with the Wind" took place in Atlanta, Georgia, on December 15, 1939, but not without a territorial struggle of its own, a war between the states of California and Georgia.

Producer David O. Selznick of course wanted it in Hollywood. But William B. Hartsfield, the feisty mayor of Atlanta, with a rampant Junior League and the full force of its citizenry behind him, argued it was "their" story and won the day.

Selznick was terrified that he and the hyper-glittery event would be ridiculed by Northerners. Margaret Mitchell, by then a Pulitzer Prize winner and long past her scapegrace flapper days, was terrified the movie would be a vulgar travesty, embarrassing her in front of her friends.

It was, of course, a triumph - for the South it was like a sweet vindication for their humiliation at the hands of Sherman's army. For Selznick, the biggest gamble of his life would go on to win 10 Oscars and become a success beyond his wildest dreams. In its day the longest and most expensive film ever made, it had cost $4,250,000 to produce. It would go on to become a global hit and, with dollars adjusted for inflation, it remains the biggest blockbuster of all time.

But the tensions and ironies present at the premiere were an indication of fault lines that, without ever completely tarnishing the film as an audience favorite, would plague its 70-year history. How could it not be so in a movie that told "our" nation's history, the Civil War and Reconstruction, from the unreconstructed South's point of view?

A hundred-thousand people turned out on a bitter cold night and there were bands on every street and old men marching in Confederate uniforms. The stars arrived in full force ... the white ones, that is.

The channel is promoting the film as a study in domestic violence, but what’s best about it is that it treats the subject obliquely. It’s really a study in character and tragic circumstance, one that poses questions about justice and human nature but doesn’t reach for answers.

It’s telling that HBO imposed the new, more provocative title, with its emphasis on abuse, and jettisoned the director Tommy Davis’s original title: “One Minute to Nine,” a reference to Ms. Maldonado’s last minute of freedom before being sentenced in her husband’s death.

Aaron Maldonado died that night in 2005, and Ms. Maldonado and their 16-year-old son, Randy, who participated in the killing, were arrested. Rather than face jury trials for murder, they accepted plea bargains that sent Randy to jail for 75 months and his mother for 10 years.

XTO Energy, a natural gas producer, is expected to be purchased by Exxon Mobil for $31 billion in stock and the assumption of $10 billion in debt, the New York Times reported this morning.

The Wall Street Journal adds that an agreement has been reached between the companies and the deal is pending XTO stockholder approval and regulatory clearance.

Our proven strategy has built a domestic reserve base with greater than 2.06 billion barrels of oil equivalent and a track record of increasing production and reserves, with a compound annual growth rate of about 24% and 29% respectively since going public in 1993.

XTO Energy claims to have the experience and expertise necessary "to acquire the best reservoir rock." It adds that it incorporates new technology and innovations to find untapped reserves and produce "healthy economic returns."
