Angels Score

ANAHEIM, Calif. - Jeff Mathis doubled home the winning run in the 11th inning as the Angels defeated the Yankees 5-4 Monday in Game 3 of the ALCS.

David Robertson started the 11th and got the first two batters, then was replaced by Alfredo Aceves. But manager Joe Girardi's strategy backfired when Kendrick hit a 3-and-1 pitch up the middle for a hit.

Then Mathis hit one off the wall in left-center and Kendrick scored the winning run.

The Yankees still lead the series 2-1 and send their best pitcher, CC Sabathia, to the mound on three-days' rest in Game 4 Tuesday at 7:57 p.m. against the Angels' Scott Kazmir.

The Yankees built a 3-0 lead on homers by Derek Jeter, leading off the game, Alex Rodriguez in the fourth and Johnny Damon in the fifth, but the Angels fought back.

Andy Pettitte cruised into the fifth inning with that lead, but Kendrick homered, the first allowed by the Yankees in the postseason, to make it 3-1. In the sixth, Bobby Abreu singled, breaking his 0-for-11 slump, and with two out Vladimir Guerrero hit one into the Angels bullpen to tie the score.

Joba Chamberlain replaced Pettitte with one out in the seventh in order to face right-handed hitters, but Kendrick tripled off the right field wall and pinch hitter Maicer Izturis, whose error allowed the winning run to score in Game 2, delivered the run with a sacrifice fly.

Hideki Matsui walked leading off the eighth, and Brett Gardner went in to pinch run. The Angels called for a pitchout at the right time and catcher Mathis threw out Gardner attempting to steal. Jorge Posada then hit one over the center field wall to tie the score, 4-4. The Yankees had a chance to take the lead, but Kevin Jepson struck out Melky Cabrera and got Jeter on a bounce back to the mound to strand two runners.
