"Anvil! The Story of Anvil" Tonight at 10 on VH1 (four stars) "That Metal Show: Anvil Special" Tonight at 11:30 on VH1 and VH1 Classic (four stars) YOU don't have to be a metal fan to love "Anvil! The Story of Anvil," last year's critically acclaimed documentary about Anvil, the down-and-out, but very rarely down-in- thedumps 1980s metal band. And tonight, VH1 and VH1 Classic show not just the film, but follow it up with a one-hour season premiere of "That Metal Show" with an all-Anvil format. The movie follows the Canadian rockers who, although they were among the founders of heavy metal and were worshipped by bands like Anthrax, Black Sabbath and Motorhead, never themselves made it. While others went on to sell millions of albums and play sold-out 50,000-seat stadiums, Anvil fell into obscurity playing in brokendown pubs for 20 people. The movie follows band members Steve "Lips" Kudlow and Robb Reiner, friends since they were 14, as they work tedious day jobs trying to just make ends meet for their families. Lips, required to wear a hairnet at work, shows viewers around a children's food catering service where he labors as a delivery man to night gigs where the promised promotion consists of an oaktag sign inside a dingy bar. During the filming, a "manager" from Italy, a woman named Titziana, e-mails Lips, offering them a European tour which she, a longtime fan, has organized. Hoping that this is the break they've been waiting 30 years for, they take off - only to find themselves again in a mess, fighting with bar owners in Europe who continually refuse to pay them.read more
