Police in Connecticut have announced that John William Lomax has been arrested and charged with the Jasper Howard murder. The University of Connecticut football player was stabbed to death on October 18, 2009.

John William Lomax, III, 21-years-old, of Bloomfield, Connecticut has been arrested and charged with the murder of University of Connecticut football player Jasper Howard. Lawyers have protested on behalf of Lomax that he was trying to break up a fight and didn’t stab Howard. Lomax was known by the nickname ‘Pooda’.
The incident happened when a fire alarm caused the evacuation of a school dance being held near the campus center after a football game. When students went out into the night a fight broke out. Howard and another student were stabbed. Howard, whose nickname was ‘Jazz’, was stabbed in the abdomen and died after being airlifted to the hospital. The other victim was another UConn football player, Brian Parker. He was treated and released with minor injuries.
Other men have been arrested in connection with the stabbing death. Hakim Muhammad, 20-years-old of Bloomfield was arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit assault and Jamal Todd, 21-years-old, of Hartford, was arrested and charged with falsely reporting an incident and reckless endangerment. Johnny Hood of Hartford, was arrested shortly after the incident and charged with breach of peace and interfering with police.
The charge of falsely reporting a
n incident against Jamal Todd stems from the accusation that he pulled the fire alarm that precipitated the fights.Howard was from Miami, Florida. His funeral was held there on Monday.
Lomax is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, October 28, 2009. He faces charges of murder and conspiracy to commit assault. He is jailed under a $2 million bond.
Authorities report that the incident is still under investigation. They are not revealing any motivation behind the fights. None of the alleged perpetrators attend the university.
