Erin Andrews

Yet, even in those videos, despite the graphic, vile and disturbing nature of them, they were scripted and staffed with people willing to indulge in weird stuff. Meaning, they were consenting adults and everyone involved, whether it was the viewers or participants, had choices. Do I watch it? Do I poop in a cup? Do I film girls sharing said cup? Despite the outcome, there was at least the option to say no. Erin Andrews, on the other hand, was exploited. She was never given the opportunity to say no.

They will likely never find the perp/videographer, who is reportedly a 49-year-old UAB Blazers fan. There is around-the-clock coverage on blog sites. Don Chavez is attempting to track down the peep-hole videographer and/or the person that posted the video to the site. Deadspin is posting daily, sometimes hourly, updates of the ongoing saga. ESPN has its lawyers on the case. It’s all futile and it’s too late. The video has probably been seen by millions. Every man with a computer, time and the wherewithal to type has seen the video, or knows someone who has seen the video. It is a dead end.

So consider this my leave Britney alone rallying cry for Erin Andrews. She’s been the obsession, the receiver of intrigue and ire, of many a blog-sites, earning her the nickname Pageviews. But, it’s always funny until someone gets hurt – or filmed through a peephole in the privacy of a locked hotel room. If someone can get that kind of access, what’s next?

It’s even more strange because — 1) no one is getting paid for this video, and, 2) how many times have you watched a sporting event wondering how (insert blonde sports reporter/sideline girl) got a job? This prompts statements like, “She only has a job because of a nice body” or something to the effect of how she has used her body to get ahead. Erin Andrews has never struck me as the kind of woman who has exploited herself to get ahead. So why spend so much time tearing down the exception to the perception of women in sports?

Think about every major sporting event, and she is typically on your screen.

During the college football season, she travels 16 weeks. During the College World Series, she spends over two weeks in Omaha. Then, there’s the Home Run Derby and all the other MLB All-Star game festivities.

Her workload is incredible. She travels for most of the year. The woman has earned her credibility. I guess it boils down to one simple fact: what if that were your sister, wife, daughter, girlfriend or mother? That changes how you might feel about the situation. Sure Andrews isn’t a mother or a wife, but she will be – and that video will still be around. Because on the internet, nothing ever goes away.

Provided, of course, there is never a massive power outage.
