A man who fled to Mexico to avoid prosecution in the murder of a Kansas college student has been returned to the United States to face charges in her death.

Israel Mireles was returned to Butler County, Kansas Thursday and made his first court appearance Friday.

He is charged with murder, rape and aggravated criminal sodomy in the 2007 death of 18-year-old Emily Sander.

Prosecutors asked that Mireles’ bond be raised to $3 million because he fled to Mexico.

Butler County Attorney Jan Satterfield also told Butler County District Judge David Ricke in El Dorado that Mireles had planned an escape from jail in Mexico by pretending to be sick.Victim Was Internet Porn Model Emily Sander, a student at Butler Community College, was last seen alive on Nov.

23, 2007 as she left an El Dorado bar with Mireles.

Police later found a large amount of blood in Mireles’ motel room and launched a search for Sander.

Her body was found six days later about 50 miles east of El Dorado.

The case grabbed national headlines when it was learned that 18-year-old Sander lead a secret life as Zoey Zane, a pornography model on the Internet.

Mireles was arrested at the home of relatives in Mexico in December 2007.

He found extradition back to the United States.

Prosecutors agreed not to seek the death penalty to expedite the extradition.

If convicted, Mireles could face life in prison without parole.
