ESPN Radio may go to FM bullpen

Busy day in local radio yesterday, with one rumor becoming fact and another even more interesting rumor making the rounds.

So let's deal with the latter first: Word is that ESPN Radio 800 might become ESPN Radio 98.9 FM, perhaps (and hopefully) as soon as the start of the baseball playoffs next month.

There's no guarantee this will happen, but Cadena Baja California owns both stations and just laid off the entire on-air staff at XMOR-FM, known as Blazin' 98.9.

With a much stronger signal, XMOR would be a perfect place to house all the talk and play-by-play programming ESPN-800 carries — you know, all the shows and games you can't hear once the sun sets.

I wouldn't expect a local show, but there are other places for that ... such as XTRA Sports 1360, which yesterday said Chris Ello would return to the station Tuesday to host a three-hour talk show each weekday at 9 a.m. Ello was among several employees laid off Jan. 20, although he had a contract through the end of 2009
