Serena Williams
Williams accused Martinez Sanchez of cheating at the French Open this year

The Williams sisters had to utilise all their resolve and battling prowess to progress into the US Open fourth round.

World number two Serena snatched the opening set against Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez and then survived a second set fightback to come through 6-3 7-5.

Venus, meanwhile, eased to the first set against Slovakian Magdalena Rybarikova and despite struggling with her serve, the third seed won 6-2 7-5.

Serena next faces Daniela Hantuchova, with Venus up against Kim Clijsters.

Defending champion Serena, who accused Martinez-Sanchez of cheating when they met at the French Open this year, was relieved after a slight wobble in the second set followed an eas yfirst set.

"You can never underestimate anyone," the second seed said. "Some people, some days they have great days. I was just happy to keep getting through my match.

"I got nasty, but to myself. I was just screaming to myself because I wasn't very happy with my performance."

Slovakian Hantuchova saw off American Vania King 6-2 6-3 earlier on Friday with an impressive performance.
