Utah State University’s students recreate fashion by recycling

Transfusing sustainability into one of the most polluting industries in the world is what was seen at the Recycle and Redesign Fashion Show at the USU’s Eccles Conference Center recently. The industry I am referring here is the textile industry that causes hazards to environment. In order to save the planet some students from Utah State University have recreated fashion with already existing material, minimizing environmental effect.

The Recycle and Redesign Fashion Show exhibited efforts of 83 students enrolled this semester. Catherine Meidell, Utah State University journalism major designed a skirt made from newspaper. It is interesting to see pages of The Herald Journal being shaped into a beautiful costume. Another dress from a student made from copies of the school’s student paper. Few garments for an undergraduate Dress and Humanities course included things like boxes, candy wrappers and balloons. While Family and Consumer Sciences Education sophomore Stephanie HawksMayne brought plastic bags to create a stunning skirt, which was teamed with a top made using an assortment of milk bottle lids and soda can tabs.

The show that was open to the public for the first time taught students important design concepts and spreading a message about sustainability at the same time. The event had nearly 30 models walking the ramp displaying the ingenious work of variousstudents . Apart from the element of fun and sustainability, the show also helped the deprived. The university authority had kept canned food as the admission fee, which was collected and donated to the local food pantry.
