E.C. Segar Gets Own Google Logo

We take a break from all the seriousness of the situation that three Navy SEALs find themselves in, and turn our attention to a sailor of a different sort. Okay, so Popeye may not have been in the U.S. Navy or fought in a real war – but he surely is one heck of a sailor.

Google-featuring-PopeyePopeye the Sailor Man was created by Elzie Crisler (E.C.) Segar, born December 8, 1894 in Chester, Illinois. Growing up, he assisted his handyman father in house painting and paper hanging jobs. At the age of 18, he decided to embark on a career path as a cartoonist.

On December 19, 1919, the comic strip Thimble Theater was published in the New York Journal, featuring Olive Oyl, Castor Oyl and Ham Gravy as lead characters. On January 17, 1929, Segar introduced a new character on Thimble Theater — Popeye the Sailor Man. The lovable sailor with a pipe perpetually in his mouth and sustained by a steady diet of canned spinach eventually stole the show; Thimble Theater eventually came to be known as Popeye.

The Google logo pays homage to E.C. Segar by featuring his most memorable character – Popeye the Sailor Man, ready to gobble up yet another can of spinach. If the SEALs have their special diet and their customized gear, Popeye got his extra boost from cans upon cans of spinach.

Aside from being the 105th anniversary of his creator’s birth, 2009 also marks the 80th year of Popeye’s existence. He is one sailor that has, indeed, figured prominently in the childhoods of several generations, and he will undoubtedly continue to do so. He may be no Navy SEAL, but like his fellow sailors, he has touched the lives of countless Americans with his bravado and his example.
