Adam Goldstein, a.k.a. DJ AM, found dead of drug overdose in his SoHo apartment
DJ AM was found dead of an apparent drug overdose inside his Manhattan apartment Friday, sources said.
The 36-year-old celebrity spinner, whose real name is Adam Goldstein, was discovered surrounded by drug paraphernalia inside his $2 million SoHo pad about 5:20 p.m., sources said.
Less than a year ago, Goldstein narrowly escaped death when a plane he was riding in skidded off of a South Carolina runway and burst into flames.
Four people were killed. Goldstein, who rose to stardom after he began dating Nicole Richie, suffered severe burns but escaped alive.
Former Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker also survived the crash.
"My deepest condolences for DJ AM," Barker's ex-wife, former Playboy playmate Shanna Moakler wrote in a Twitter feed. "You were a great artist and will be severely missed. My thoughts and prayers to his family and friends."
Goldstein was slated to star in a intervention-style MTV reality show, helping teens break their drug addictions.
Born in Philadelphia, Goldstein battled drug addiction, obesity and depression as a youngster.

NEW YORK — DJ AM, the sought-after disc jockey who became a celebrity in his own right with high-profile romances and a glamorous lifestyle, was found dead Friday at his apartment, which had drug paraphernalia in it, a law enforcement official said.
Paramedics had to break down the door to his Manhattan apartment before they found his body at about 5:20 p.m., the official told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because family hadn't been notified. There was no evidence of foul play, the official said.
DJ AM, whose real name was Adam Goldstein, had talked openly about past addictions to crack cocaine, Ecstasy and other drugs, but he claimed he had been drug-free for years.
He died nearly a year after surviving a South Carolina plane crash that killed four people and seriously injured rock musician Travis Barker.
