issues:Mia Sara on Fringe Jackets

The folks at Merriam-Webster have it all wrong. “Slang: very good : excellent; also: all right, fashionable, hip” is not a comprehensive entry for “cool.” No, the definition of cool isn’t really complete without a photo of Sloane Peterson, Ferris Bueller’s very, very choice girlfriend.

Mia Sara, Alan Ruck and Matthew Broderick in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, 1986.

Here at Slaves to Fashion, we're big fans of all of John Hughes’ heroines, but Sloane Peterson—played by the bewitching Brooklyn native, Mia Sara—was and always will be the coolest girl in school. It's downright mind-boggling to think that Sara only wore one outfit in her role as Sloane Peterson, but oh, what a magnificent outfit it was: long before Chloe Sevigny and Rachel Bilson worked the boots-and-shorts look, Sloane waltzed into—and out of—school in the combo topped off with a fringe jacket.
