Victoria Kennedy shows fortitude in a time of sorrow

Throughout three harrowing days that put her private pain on public display, Victoria Reggie Kennedy defined grace under pressure, putting aside her own anguish as she reached out to comfort blue-collar constituent and world dignitary alike.

“She was very composed, but you can see the deep sadness in her eyes. Even I was crying,” said Amanda Hughes, 27, of Cambridge - one of scores who packed the Mission Hill pub Flann O’Brien’s yesterday to watch U.S. Sen. WASHINGTON — Sen. Edward M. Kennedy went toward his final rest alongside brothers John and Robert Saturday evening, celebrated for “the dream he kept alive” for four decades after they perished.

On a day marking the end of a political era, Kennedy was eulogized by President Barack Obama at a Catholic church in his home state of Massachusetts, and his funeral motorcade was later driven past flags lowered to half-staff in his memory at the U.S. Capitol in Washington.
